In celebration of this year’s National Poetry Day, we were delighted to welcome prize-winning poet Sarah Ziman for a special author event.

Sarah is a Welsh poet who writes for both children and adults. Her work often draws inspiration from everyday life, making her poems both funny and relatable for young readers. Her anthology Why Did My Brain Make Me Say It? has been shortlisted for both the UKLA Award and the Welsh Poetry Award. She has also won the YorkMix Children’s Poems competition, and her work has been highly commended for the Caterpillar Prize by well-known writers such as Roger McGough and Michael Morpurgo.

The day began with a whole-school event, where Sarah read aloud some of her poems and spoke about her life as a poet. Our pupils were fascinated to learn more about her writing journey and were able to ask their own questions in a lively Q&A session. To make the day even more special, pupils then had the opportunity to purchase a signed copy of Sarah’s anthology.

Later in the day, Sarah led poetry workshops for Year 6, guiding pupils through fun, creative activities to inspire their own writing. The sessions gave children the chance to explore poetry in new and imaginative ways, building confidence to experiment with words and ideas.

It was an inspiring and memorable visit that brought poetry to life for our pupils, and ensuring that their love of poetry will continue to grow well beyond National Poetry Day.
