Activities & Events Outings/Visits

Year 5 pupils went on a trip to the BFI on London's Southbank. The visit was designed to provide valuable context and background to our Spring Term class reading book The Machine Gunners by Robert Westall.

In the morning there was a series of BFI interactive workshops featuring film clips and films from the BFI National Archive, such as newsreels and government information films, which show wartime life on the Home Front on subjects such as: the Blitz, ‘digging for victory’, rationing, evacuation, Windrush and the impacts of WW2.

Pupils were encouraged to discuss the challenges faced during this time and take part in drama activities around the individual experience of being a wartime evacuee. The trip concluded with an afternoon’s screening of Goodnight Mister Tom (1998), a moving story about an evacuee during the Blitz.
